How Much Alcohol Is Too Much...or Enough?

So my next goal for the new year is Limit Alcohol. I will admit, I think I left this one too vague. I need more structure. (Ok, those of you who know me well, stop laughing!). How do I define "limit"? How much is too much? How much is enough? At this point, I typically have a glass of wine most nights. It is something that brings complete enjoyment and relaxation to the end of my day. So is one glass helpful or harmful? Good for my heart, bad for my weight?

I think my intent when I wrote this was to not go over a certain limit of wine or beer on any given occasion. Because when I do, I don't like how I feel the next day. I lose a day of workouts the next day and I know ALL those extra calories are not good for me. But I don't think "limit" means I should give up my nightly glass and after all, I can define the term limit in reference to my own goal, right? In fact, I believe one of our Founding Fathers would tell me to keep the glass of wine in my day:

"Wine makes daily living easier, less hurried, with fewer tensions and more tolerance." ~ Ben Franklin

"We hear of the conversion of water into wine at the marriage in Cana as of a miracle. But this conversion is, through the goodness of God, made every day before our eyes. Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, and which incorporates itself with the grapes, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy." ~ Ben Franklin

So dear friends and readers, what do you think? What is limit? What is too much? What is enough?

Keyword = Moderation.
Its perfectly okay to have one glass of wine or dark beer a day. The darker the beverage, the more antioxidants it has. Check out the American Heart Associations guidelines http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4422

First of all, Ben Franklin is one of my heroes, and thank you for quoting him!! Second of all, I definitely don't think you should give up your nightly glass. Something that brings you relaxation and enjoyment is never worth giving up, in my opinion. And I think that on holidays and such, moderation is a great idea. It would probably help to spread the drinks out over a course of the night...like have one and then drink something non-alcoholic, and then another drink if you wish. That is a difficult thing to accomplish, though. But I know you can do it!

Please stick to the wine !
My late husband & I learned at a young age, with our first employers, starting our 30 yr careers, to drink with them !!
Remember that all alcohol contains sufficient drug like power, to deal out some very nasty severe permenant health afflictions. The 5 most dealt are: Grand-Mal Seizures, partial blindness & deafness, corroded livers & good old heart attacks. None of which have any cures either.
You're obviously intelligent, attractive & have your entire life ahead of you.
Don't destroy things by drinking alcohol, anything at all, other than wine. Please !
You don't want to arrive at the Pearly Gates early, like my dear hubby, nor take a early retirement due to disability like me !!!
Do you now ?!?

Knew you'd like those quotes too ;o)

You know I struggle with defining the limit as well. I agree with you and all of your commenters to a certain degree.

There is no doubt that excessive, prolonged drinking can lead to major health problems, but certainly not at the level you're referring to. Many, many of the healthiest cultures in our world drink daily and actually even smoke without suffering the the disease that we do in our society because they are, overall, in much better health due to a lot of physical labor and healthy eating habits. Think of the cultures that live much of their lives in the sun and have no skin cancer, again because of their diets and overall health. I guess I'm just trying to remind Shelia, that you can't blame the health of the whole body on one factor.

I always laugh at how some in church circles will condemn others for their alcohol cousumption, but there they sit with their big fat bellies shoving a ho ho and piece of fried chicken into their mouths. Their diet is going to kill them long before your daily wine will ;o)

I know that was a bit rambly and slightly OT, so please forgive the rantings of this mad housewife.

love you,
mis
